Richie Havens - Folk Legend
Perform at Center for Social Justice Benefit Show
The Case Western Reserve University School of Law’s inaugural concert to benefit its Center for Social Justice will feature a very special evening with legendary folk musician Richie Havens.
Ohio Theatre Friday, at 8 p.m.
Tickets for the show are $35 for the general public and $20 for students. A $5 discount is available for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum members.
The Center for Social Justice, which was established at the law school last fall, seeks to assist students financially who wish to pursue a career in social justice and to encourage all students to devote some time to public interest work during and after law school. Proceeds from the benefit concert will promote public interest work by funding scholarships and summer stipends for students aspiring to a career in social justice and by providing loan repayment assistance to graduates pursuing such careers.
In addition to his music, Havens is known for his charitable work. In the mid-1970’s, he co-founded the Northwind Undersea Institute, an oceanographic children's museum on City Island in the Bronx, New York. The museum led to the creation of The Natural Guard, an organization that educates children about the environment. Havens, who performs at a number of benefit shows each year, was awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award in 1991.
Prior to the show Havens is offering a limited number of fans and guests the opportunity to meet with him from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for a reception in the Allen Theatre lobby. This VIP package, which includes preferred seating and the pre-show reception, is available for $100.

Buddy Greene - Sprounted Acorn House Concert
Buddy brings his unique blend of roots, Gospel, and bluegrass music to the Sprouted Acorn house concert series in Charm, OH Buddy Greene's live show is equal parts hymn sing, jam session, church house revival, and journey through his own musical history. Buddy's solo career has taken him from Carnegie Hall playing alongside Paul Simon to MerleFest playing with the legendary Doc Watson, all the while entertaining audiences with his humor and impeccable harmonica skills. He has emerged as a respected songwriter as well, penning the classic "Mary Did You Know" which has been recorded by artists ranging from Natalie Cole to Reba McEntire to Clay Aiken.
As a musician, Buddy has found himself drawn to the acoustic strains of bluegrass and Americana music. Buddy released "RUFUS" in 2002, which was hailed by The Chicago Tribune as one of the "Top 10" Bluegrass albums of that year. Greene followed "RUFUS" with the reflective "Hymns & Prayer Songs", a vocal and instrumental collection comprised of hymns old & new in a string-band, acoustic setting. In 2007, he released "Happy Man", a feel-good bluegrass/Americana/gospel acoustic mix which earned rave reviews and heavy national and international radio airplay.
Joining Buddy is Jeff Taylor, a band leader/keyboard player/multi -instrumentalist on numerous theatre productions, live shows, and recording sessions. Live highlights include 2 years as bandleader at the Ryman auditorium ("Always Patsy Cline"), hundreds of shows as bandleader at Opryland theme park and the General Jackson Showboat, The Skaggs Family Christmas Tour, and many appearances on the Grand Ole Opry with numerous artists. Jeff also plays accordion and sings with the Grammy nominated western swing group "The Time Jumpers".
Buddy Greene and Jeff Taylor will perform at the Sprouted Acorn house concert series in Charm, OH on Saturday, September 6. A potluck dinner begins at 5:30 with music beginning at 6:30. A jam session will follow the show; musicians should bring their instruments along. Sprouted Acorn house concerts are open to the public. Reservations can be made by calling 330-893-7788 or e-mailing

Radney Foster
$15.00 adv / $17.00 dos
Beachland Ballroom, 15711 Waterloo Road, Cleveland | All Ages
Are offering a special $20 package ticket for Radney Foster and The Derailers.
Country singer and songwriter Radney Foster began making a name for himself in the late 1980s as half of the duo Foster & Lloyd. Later, Foster shone on his own as one of a bright new generation of country stars raised as much on the Beatles and the Rolling Stones as on Merle Haggard and Hank Williams. Coming from a pop-country background and wearing glasses instead of the requisite cowboy hat, Foster was nonetheless embraced by a Nashville not known for bucking trends. But Foster's country roots are beyond reproach and that's something the folks in Music City appreciate.
Radney's early days found him performing small-club gigs while attending the University of the South, a liberal arts college in Sewanee, TN, and took leave from school to try his luck in Nashville. In 1985, he signed with the MTM publishing firm as a staff songwriter, and soon struck up a partnership with Bill Lloyd, who joined the company two months later. Their "Since I Found You" became a Top Ten hit for the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, and on the strength of their demo tape RCA signed them as recording artists. Foster & Lloyd recorded three albums from 1987-1990, and landed a series of Top Ten singles in addition to complimentary reviews.
When their third album tanked, the duo amicably disbanded and Foster pursued a solo career. His debut, Del Rio, Texas, 1959, appeared in 1992 and proved a commercial as well as critical success; four of its singles hit the Top 40, and of those, "Just Call Me Lonesome" made the Top Ten, while "Nobody Wins" fell one spot short of the top of the country charts. However, the 1995 follow-up, Labor of Love, wasn't quite as popular with audiences as it was with critics. Foster revamped his approach on his third solo effort, 1999's See What You Want to See, which was more influenced by pop and rock. He subsequently parted ways with his label, Arista, and signed with the smaller Dualtone, which issued the live album Are You Ready for the Big Show?, a more traditional country outing, in 2001. The studio follow-up, 2002's Another Way to Go, found Foster exploring classic-style R&B in addition to country. In 2004 he released the acoustic album And Then There's Me (The Back Porch Sessions), only available online, but 2006 saw another Dualtone record, This World We Live In

The Derailers
$12.00

Are offering a special $20 package ticket for Radney Foster and The Derailers.
In a career that has given rise to more than a decade’s worth of fine-tuned, highly anticipated and wonderfully received music, the Derailers continue to build the relationship between song, listener and dance floor. Each album has been a mix of well-crafted original songs and cover songs so thoughtfully chosen and so representative of the band, that fans think they are as original as the band themselves. Challenged by their fans to create a sound that mirrors the shuffle of happy boots on a hardwood floor, the Derailers have fed the hungry dancehall crowds with their classic country beats and a 60s pop sensibility. Fans continue to show their appreciation and admiration with requests for encores long after the last drink has been served. In terms of sound, the Derailers have gotten smoother with age. As Hofeldt puts it, “I think we have retained the path we are going for. But we have certainly grown as players and allowed other influences to come in.” Their music celebrates the legacies of Buck Owens, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Charlie Rich and the Beatles, while still being on the edge of today’s country music. Hofeldt describes his view of country music as, “finding out what love really is, versus what you thought it was when you were a kid.” For all the fans of the Derailers, love is all you need.

David Lindley
Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley performs music that redefines the word "eclectic." Lindley, well known for his many years as the featured accompanist with Jackson Browne, and leader of his own band El Rayo-X, has long championed the concept of world music. David Lindley is one of the worlds most in-demand session men, having played for decades in Jackson Brownes band and recording with the biggest names in the music world including
Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, etc.
The David Lindley electro-acoustic performance effortlessly combines American folk, blues, and bluegrass traditions with elements from African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, and Turkish musical sources. Lindley incorporates an incredible array of stringed instruments including but not limited to Kona and Weissenborn Hawaiian lap steel guitar, Turkish saz and chumbus, Middle Eastern oud, and Irish bouzouki. The eye-poppingly clad "Mr. Dave's" uncanny vocal mimicry and demented sense of humor make his onstage banter a highlight of the show.

Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys with Claire Lynch
The Kent Stage - downtown Kent
8PM (330) 677-5005 or kentstage.org for info and tickets
Born in Stratton, VA, in 1927, Ralph Stanley and his older brother Carter formed the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys. In 1946 Ralph and Carter were being broadcast from radio station WCYB in Bristol, VA. The music, which was inspired by their Virginia mountain home, was encouraged by their mother, who taught Ralph the claw-hammer style of banjo picking that he and Carter became famous for. They recorded for such companies as the small Rich-R-Tone label and later Columbia, a relationship that lasted from 1949 until 1952. These classic sessions defined the Stanleys' own approach to bluegrass and made them as important as Bill Monroe. After leaving Columbia, the Stanleys were with Mercury, Starday, and King. Leaning toward more gospel at times, Carter and Ralph made a place for themselves in the music industry. In December 1966, Carter Stanley died in a Virginia hospital after a steady decline in health. He was just 41 years old. After much consideration and grief, Ralph carried on without Carter. Already their haunting mountain melodies made them stand apart from other bluegrass bands, but Ralph expanded upon this foundation and took his own "high lonesome" vocals to a new plane.
Popular at bluegrass festivals, Ralph and each edition of the Clinch Mountain Boys grew to be one of the most respected outfits in bluegrass. As far west as California and even up in the hollers of Kentucky, people were drawn to the poignant, mournful sound of Ralph Stanley's style. Different from all the rest, Ralph's ability to hit the right notes and chords made him a singer of trailblazing proportions. Ralph continued to record for a wide variety of labels, including Jalyn, Rebel, King Bluegrass, Blue Jay, Jessup, Stanleytone, his own label, and Freeland. A devoted family man, his constant touring took its toll on his first marriage, a union that produced daughters Lisa Joy and Tonya and oldest son Timothy. His second wife, Jimmie, also a singer, gave him another son late in life; Ralph II followed in both his father's and uncle's footsteps and played in the Clinch Mountain Boys with his dad. A Bluegrass Hall of Fame member along with Carter, Ralph Stanley was an inspiration to Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, the late Keith Whitley, and even Monroe acolyte Ricky Skaggs. With his raw emotions and Mother Stanley's three-fingered banjo technique, he helped bring the mountain style of bluegrass music to mainstream audiences. A full survey of the Stanley Brothers' career, including sides they recorded for several different labels, finally appeared in 2007 with Time-Life's three-disc Definitive Collection box set. ~ Jana Pendragon, All Music Guide
